On the eve of June 30, Hong Kong was officially passed back to China. This event will mark what Willem van Kemenade sees as the start of an increasingly problematic — and even dangerous — reintegration of the old Chinese empire into a new world superpower. Since the early 1980s, investment money has been pouring into China from Hong Kong and trade has escalated at a rocket’s pace. A few years later, the same pattern began between China and Taiwan. The combination of Hong Kong/Taiwan management, financial and export know-how with China’s inexhaustible pool of cheap labor and land has enabled China in one decade to leap from an impoverished revolutionary state to a major international trading power. This economic boom, in conjunction with the violation of intellectual property rights, systematic tax fraud, and the corruption of the police force, has helped shape the “socialist market economy,” China’s third way — and a new mix of old-fashioned Soviet Communism and East Asian capitalis

This book is a scholarly yet highly readable account of the “middleman” role that Hong Kong has played in China’s Open Door Policy. Dr. Sung develops a “Theory of Intermediation” to explain the paradoxical situation by which Hong Kong’s role as intermediary in China’s commodity trade is becoming more prominent in spite of the fact that since the development of the Open Door Policy in 1979, China has established many direct diplomatic, commercial and transportation links with the outside world. The book makes an important contribution to understanding China’s various phases of economic reform and its interactions with global economic markets. Dr. Sung predicts that China’s demands on Hong Kong’s capacity as intermediary will increase dramatically after the handover in 1997.

In the 1990s, the volume of trade in and across the Pacific Ocean has surpassed that of the Atlantic. In fiscal terms, it amounts to a three-trillion-a-year market growing at the rate of three billion a week. Cragg explores the reasons for, and the results of, this phenomenon.

Over five years, Christopher Dillon a unilingual expat bought and renovated an office, an apartment and a factory in Hong Kong. Based on this experience he wrote Landed: The expatriate’s guide to buying and renovating property in Hong Kong. Landed explains how properties are bought and sold. It introduces the players and the parts of the buying process that are unique to Hong Kong. It profiles the neighborhoods that are popular with expatriates, and outlines alternatives to investing in residential property. And it looks at how to successfully renovate your new property, using case studies. Running time: 2 hours and 20 seconds. Recorded with MP3 at 128 KBps at a constant bit rate. There is no digital rights management (DRM) on this audiobook, so you can transfer it to your portable MP3 player
